The god of war procreating with the goddess of beauty had to be a dangerous idea from the start, with two such strong aspects as love and war being thrown together into one person. Yet Ares and Aphrodite produced several children together, and there was no better example of why two such strong beings should not reproduce as their youngest immortal daughter, Danica. While she did not resemble her mother in the slightest, she had become strikingly beautiful, and was just as volatile as her temperamental father. She was the goddess of torment and manipulation, each having its source from each parent…Torment, from the pain and horrors of war, and manipulation from the power of love and beauty.
She wasn’t anything special yet, not in anyone else’s eyes, at any rate. She was only a century old, and compared to the many millennia her other families had been alive, she had a lot of catching up to do, and was already quite a powerful little thing, given her age and experience. She had an obsessive nature, desperate for power and respect and a strong reputation. She wanted to be far more renown than the likes of Zeus or Hades or even her own parents. She had high hopes and dreams, but if the gods could take down the Titans, then why couldn’t she build up an army against them? Immortality and invincibility were two different things, and true invincibility was rare, if it existed at all. Zeus had nearly been dethroned at one point (perhaps even more than the story she had heard), so why not again…? And why not more permanent?
Her far fetched fantasies were on her mind per usual as she visited the Underworld, performing her voluntary duties for her great uncle, Hades. Her specialties included torment, of course, and so what better use to put such talent than the Fields of Punishment, torturing wicked souls who were doomed to pain for the rest of eternity. It wasn’t hard…She usually preferred more laborious work, actually physically harming people, but using her godly powers was just fine here. It was hard to physically harm souls when they had no physical bodies. Others were there, doing the same as her, taking more enjoyment in it. They apparently hadn’t experienced the pleasures of actually using their hands, actually using more physical effort into harming people, instead of mentally using their powers.
Instead Danna sat reclined in a chair she brought in herself, flipping through a mortal fashion magazine and tabloids, catching up on modern human gossip and trends. It had been a little over a decade since she had last been to Earth, and still much had changed. Her knees were pulled up, holding the magazine high enough to read while one hand flipped the pages. Her other hand was twirling her fingers almost nonchalantly, but such effortless motion was creating such excruciating pain to the nearby souls, all wailing and writhing. It was all so dull right now. She much preferred to be training with Ares, but he was busy at the moment with her brothers. That or torturing mortals, but she was still doing research on the modern mortal world so she would fit in easily enough.
Sighing heavily, Danna tossed her magazine aside and relaxed, glancing around. She rolled her eyes at the cackling gods and goddesses messing around before eyeing the ones around her. She scoffed and shook her head. “Pussies.”

The Underworld was the most glorious place to be, Jesse was certain. The cheerfulness of Mount Olympus and the chaos of Earth were not nearly as pleasing to him as his true home, down here among the dead. Every soul belonging to every mortal who had ever died was down here, living either relatively peacefully or being eternally tortured for displeasing the gods with their petty, fleeting lives.
Jesse was headed to the Fields of Punishment on this day. Other areas of the Underworld that housed souls were relatively peaceful, though still rather dim and ghostly-looking. Visiting the rivers was entertaining, but he had done much of that lately. No, the Fields was where Jesse was intent on spending his morning.
He entered the area and glanced around at the deities present, all laughing and muttering and having a great time tormenting the dead. All of them were incredibly deep in their work, except for one. His golden-haired cousin (Danica, he thought her name was, though he wasn't sure if she had another name she preferred) was reclining in a chair with a magazine, lazily tormenting the souls nearby. She was doing a good enough job, Jesse could tell by the shrieks and moans that the pitiful beings released, but she seemed more wrapped up in her magazine than in the power she was using.
Jesse didn't know very much about her, other than that she was the youngest daughter of Ares and Aphrodite. She was about one hundred years old, certainly not two hundred, and he hadn't seen her very often. Of course, with all of the commotion earlier with the second war against the Titans, and the demigod prophecy and what not, as well as the current status of Camp Half-blood, Jesse wasn't surprised that the two of them hadn't exactly stopped to exchange pleasantries. He rarely communicated with his own half-siblings, much less his extended family.
Jesse watched as Danica grew apparently bored of her magazine, glaring at the gods and goddesses nearby. He approached just in time to hear her call them a very amusing name, to which he smirked and took a seat near her.
"Are they not doing it right?"he asked her, amused at her apparent disdain for the other deities in the room, but genuinely curious as to why she thought that they were "pussies."

She would have to visit the mortal world at some point today…All of her magazines should get her caught up by today. Danna had gotten all dolled up today, a red and black corset dress with a garter and fishnets and burlesque heels. She wore very intimidating rings and ruby berets in her golden halo of hair. Her appearance was far too angelic for such demonic attire. Her face was youthful and innocent with curly blond hair and bright green eyes. She looked more like the girl next door than a sexy vixen, but looks could always be deceiving. Besides, there were very few gods and goddesses in Mount Olympus she hadn’t screwed, and she was craving something different and new. She hadn’t been around the Underworld a lot, but not many of the gods here seemed all that appealing. She yawned dramatically and glanced up from her magazine and around. They were all paying more attention to the suffering souls than her attractive outfit. Of course they all looked like hags, but a bit of attention was always nice. She was her mother’s daughter, after all.
Danna shifted in her chair, making a mental note at picking up a pair of those new Christian Louboutin shoes. Mortals did have good taste…Nowadays, anyway. She still didn’t understand the ’60’s or 70’s and it was hard to imagine the 1800’s or even the original togas they had all worn in Ancient Greece. Personally, she saw no real appeal to it except for the now and then costume party or something. Robes were somewhat better, but the modern world was where her mind was set. Everything was so much sexier and out there and appealing. At least what she could see in these magazines. She was almost excited to go to Earth to see how things had progressed in the past decade. She hadn’t been very fond of Earth when she was exiled there, but on her own free will it wouldn’t be so bad. And things had changed since then. And she sure as hell wasn’t going to let the memory of Paul keep her away…In fact, he was probably the reason she was determined now, more than ever, to go. To prove a point: love had no power.
After a few hours, magazines got old and she tossed them aside like trash. Luckily the Underworld wasn’t her home and this was no real job. It was a nice change of scenery from the light goodness that Mount Olympus represented. She was feeling restless, though. She was growing bored of everything! She had no idea how all of her family members had survived this long without committing suicide out of boredom. She supposed there was Earth…They mated with enough damn mortals, but Earth had never really seemed appealing until recently. Oh well, she supposed it was time to find out. Before she could make her exit, though, she was approached by another god…One more unfamiliar. She couldn’t remember having seen him before, but he resembled her Uncle Hades enough for her to assume this was his and Persephone’s son Jesmar.
He sat near her and inquired about them “doing it right”, which confused her a moment. She furrowed her brows before glancing at the others and she laughed, shaking her head. “No, no…They’re just idiots. I meant them,” she said, nodding to the moaning souls around her. “They can’t take a bit of pain…They’re so pitiful,” she said, sneering at the one closest to her that was on its ghostly knees. “I don’t know, maybe they’d be more entertaining if I could do more with them.”

After Alessia, Jesse had sworn off women altogether. But this was different... he had never actually been interested in a goddess before, not only in her appearance, but in what she had to say. Most of the goddesses around were terribly cheerful, save for a few like his mother, or Hecate, or the Fates. Danica seemed a walking contradiction, though. She was gorgeous, Jesse had to admit, with a golden halo of hair around her pretty, sweet face. She was somewhat on the small side, for a god, and everything about her radiated angelic beauty, save for her attire and her personality.
She wore a simply mouthwatering outfit, quite devilish in nature. The reds and the black and demonic barrettes in her hair made the first impression she gave a bit contradictory. It only interested Jesse more, to see a goddess who didn't look entirely predictable. Usually you could just glance at them and know immediately who they were, what they were like, and what realm of the universe they controlled. Jesse's cousin, however, was a mystery - he only knew her name, and her parentage. She was the daughter of Ares and Aphrodite, both powerful gods who spent their time on Mount Olympus with the rest. So what was Danica doing down here in the Underworld?
He chuckled with her while she explained herself - the gods and goddesses around them were merely idiots, it was the souls that were the pussies. At least, according to Danica. Jesse still didn't understand why... the others were doing just what they did every other day, and Hades himself hadn't complained about any idiocy in the way they did things. And the souls - they were sent to the Fields of Punishment for a reason, to pay for their transgressions on Earth. They were supposed to be tortured, were supposed to give moans of pain and shrieks of anguish. It was all very satisfying, to everyone but Danica, it seemed.
"What do you mean, do more with them?" Jesse asked, honestly intrigued. He had seen her using her power, whatever it was, to cause the souls some sort of pain. It seemed to be going quite well, going by the reactions of the ghosts around her. Jesse was content to use his powers on the souls, smiting them with diseases that they could never get well from. Of course, they were already dead, so there wasn't the satisfaction of taking a life like there was on Earth. But other than that, Jesse couldn't see what Danica was implying, and he wanted to know.

Company--actual company--was the last thing Danna expected to have. She made damn sure the other moronic “deities” stayed away from her, a good several yards away. They found her to be as boring as she found them to be simple and retarded. They were all on their feet, dancing around as they tormented the poor souls around them. Don’t get her wrong, she was a sadist and thoroughly enjoyed other people being in pain, but after having done this for about a year, it was already old. There was nothing new or interesting to do with them, and the others…Despite doing the same exact thing day in and day out, were perfectly fine with it. She loved the tortured cries of people most days, but the repetition of it was mildly annoying, like playing the same song over and over and over again without pause or change. She loved the sound of it most days, but now it was just getting old. Why not new sounds? Why not shut them up altogether? This was just frustrating.
At least the stranger beside her offered some difference in things. She had never seen him before, which was quite a feat. He had to be the son of Hades and Persephone, and aside from being her cousin, he actually lived in the Underworld. It was strange they had never run into each other here before. It wasn’t as if she had ever cared about meeting him or not, but the Underworld wasn’t the most populous place for gods and goddesses. Oh well, she got to meet him now, her second cousin. She wasn’t entirely sure for a moment why he decided to come over to her, though for a moment she expected to be somewhat fussed at or something for not being as involved and happy looking as the others. Oh well she was still doing her job and it wasn’t even technically a job. She had first started “volunteering” or whatever out of boredom and love of causing pain, but now it was just a habit and offered a place to hang out away from the jolly do-gooders that littered Mount Olympus.
Of course it wasn’t all sugar and sweetness…Not with commanding men like Zeus and Ares running around, but the general atmosphere and nice and peaceful and light. Down here was more her speed. Of course, she was more interested in Earth these days. Nothing held her interest for too long, it seemed. At her cousin’s question she raised an eyebrow and shook her head, assuming it was very obvious, but she supposed he was just as slow and lazy as the rest of them. “It’s too easy. I can look at them and they hurt, I can twist my hand and they hurt, I can just sit here and do nothing and just will them to hurt and it happens! But they’re dead…They’re only souls. I can’t physically hurt them…Chains and whips and knives…What good do those things do? The only real way of tormenting them is by using our powers and it’s just…It’s lazy and unsatisfying,” she said with a shrug. “Plus they’ve basically given up all hope. There’s no variety in things…No variety in actions, or technique or anything…It’s boring. I’d rather torture mortals, which is why I’m catching up on modern day Earth,” she said, patting her magazine.

Jesse's powers had always been his weapons of choice when dealing with souls and mortals alike. He had certainly trained himself physically over the centuries, but as the God of Disease it was his job to stay ahead of medical technology. As mortal technology grew more and more advanced, keeping ahead had become an increasingly more challenging task. Most of Jesse's strength lay in his powers, as was the case for nearly all gods and goddesses. He supposed that they, like him, had never really had it occur to them to use anything besides their powers for or against the souls, mortals, and other creatures with which they came into contact.
He listened to Danica's reasoning, holding her gaze before glancing down to the souls she mentioned. He pondered what she had said, and wondered if maybe she was right. Their powers were who they were, but surely there were alternative methods of doing things. Mortals didn't have powers, but some of them accomplished enough to even catch the eyes of the gods. Even without powers they managed to do enough good or bad to land their souls into Elysium or the Fields of Punishment.
"That's an interesting take on it..." Jesse mused, glancing back at his cousin. He glanced at the souls around her, all moaning and shrieking in pain, and then his eyes shifted to her hand, where she was nonchalantly twirling her fingers. She looked like a very symbol of power sitting there and doing that, causing so much pain with so little effort. But perhaps she was right and there was another side to the coin... maybe relying solely on a power was short-sighted and lazy. The gods could certainly do anything a mortal could manage, and perhaps they would only reach their full potential when they used mortal methods of getting things done in congruence with their already strong powers.
"Very interesting," Jesse said again, glancing back up at Danica. He nodded while she talked about heading to Earth, patting her magazine that looked as though it was chuck full of mortal gossip. Jesse chuckled and shook his head.
"I haven't been to Earth for quite some time," he confessed. "I came back about half a century before that demigod prophecy started circulating and making everyone go crazy," he told her. He hadn't been on Earth since he had left Alessia... or she had left him, rather. He felt a soft twinge of pain, much less intense than had been the usual in earlier years, but still definitely there. He should probably think about going back to Earth sometime soon as well, he decided. The more he stayed away, the more Alessia was the reason, and he didn't want her memory to have that power over him.
"So what exactly are you planning for your trip back down there?" he asked, leaning forward and resting his elbows on his knees, and interlacing his fingers together. Whatever it was she was planning, Jesse was sure he would find it just as intriguing as he had found everything about her so far. Danica was an interesting person, to say the least.

Danna smiled to herself with Jesse’s response to her views on things. It wasn’t exactly an opinion she shared with the rest of the world; even being the goddess of torment and manipulation, she was still working on her goody-goody reputation. Even if the “torment” part of her title could ruin things, the “manipulation” part sure did her a hell of a lot of good. It was easy to keep people where she needed them until she was ready to act. Until then, she was stuck playing nice and being naughty in secret. Of course, she found no use in hiding her little ideas from Jesmar. She was already torturing the poor souls, she wasn’t going to pretend torture was the most horrible thing in the world to her. It did please her that he called it interesting, though she wasn’t sure if he was serious or not. The gods were really too lazy and set in their ways and she highly doubted anything she thought or said would make much of a difference or matter much to anyone. It was something one got used to, though Danna wouldn’t give up hope that some day it would matter.
“It is. Not that it matters much to anyone else. You know how these…gods can be,” she said with a roll of her eyes. “Especially those like my parents. Just because you have power, doesn’t mean you should rely on it for everything…Sometimes even magic can fail you,” she grumbled, eyes flashing with irritation and anger. Ares…Oh how much like him she was, and that was maybe why they didn’t quite see eye to eye. But her mother seemed to be under the same impression that everyone else was; that she should just give it up. She had beaten her father once…Others had at other times throughout history, too. Honestly, she’d rather let Ares kill her than give up on all of her plans, all of her hopes and dreams. Her pride was as strong as that of Ares, and it would maybe even kill her one day, and that was a fact she was more than fine with accepting.
The irritation presented by her parents and the other Twelve Olympian gods faded as the conversation turned towards Earth. “I haven’t been in over a decade, since my father exiled me there,” she said with a shrug. “Being forced there against my will didn’t warm me up to the place, but it seems like a nice vacation away from the idiots,” she murmured, highly doubting anyone important would be listening to her. No one would find her important enough or threatening enough. She was just a “child”. Resentment filled her up deeply, making her stomach clench and churn almost painfully. But that was just fine…Whatever they thought would change one day, and they’d regret treating her in such a manner. Luckily, she was sure the minor gods could be riled up into a rebellion with the arrogance and pride of the so-called “major” gods.
At his question, Danna glanced away from the souls around her and back at her cousin. He seemed interested, which surprised her, and she studied him a moment before shrugging nonchalantly. “Oh I don’t know. Get laid, kill someone…Torture people…really torture them. I’ll rent out a house, I suppose…A place to perform…Things like that,” she said with a small laugh, sitting up straighter and glancing at him once more. “Maybe stay out of trouble for once,” she added with a smirk. There was no way she could possibly piss off her father or anyone else from the mortal world. And it would give her some peace for once, she figured. “I’m Danna, by the way. Danica, if you’ve met my parents, but I honestly don’t prefer it.”

Jesse laughed and glanced down at his hands where they mingled in front of him, grinning while Danica continued expressing her opinions on the gods. Idiots, she called them, thinking them stupid for relying only on power and magic. She believed they were set in their ways and couldn't see the downsides to the ways that they were acting. Jesse thought about it, and he had to agree. He was physically strong, for sure, but the majority of his training had focused on his power of disease. If not for his power, though, he would be only a shadow of his former self. Just a ten-foot tall man who couldn't die, but was otherwise not any stronger than some mortal would be at Jesse's height and weight. The thought made his stomach churn and the hair at the nape of his neck prickle. Without his power, he would be nothing.
Danica mentioned her parents, Ares and Aphrodite, and how they relied solely on their powers. The gods were very inflexible when it came to the ways in which they did things, as well as who they viewed themselves as. They would all be very closed-minded to something like this. Hades certainly would be, Jesse thought with a snort. He had always been a stickler for rules and for tradition. In his eyes, if something had worked for this long, then it shouldn't be tampered with. The idea that their methods could be made better would fall on deaf ears if spoken to Hades. He was a stubborn man, as was his son. They were father and son, yes, but it seemed they were always at each others' throats.
Hades would have snorted in derision and waved all of Danica's unorthodox ideas aside, but Jesse was beginning to be more and more certain that his cousin had the right idea after all.
Jesse looked back up to her just in time to see the blaze of fury in her eyes fade away. She felt strongly about this, that much was for certain. But why? It was a different idea, perhaps even a bright one, and even if Jesse was interested in being a part of it, he didn't think he could get so intense about it. Danica had to have been thinking this up for quite some time, and had probably tried it out once or twice... Something must have happened. Jesse wasn't surprised; he could hardly believe that someone with a vision like Danica's would have smooth sailing ahead, but he was curious.
They talked about Earth for a while, and she mentioned how Ares had exiled her there once. That piqued Jesse's interest even further. What could she have done that would inspire Ares to banish her to Earth for a decade? Jesse himself had never been exiled, although he and his father argued a considerable amount, every day at least, it seemed. Of course, Ares was the god of war, and Jesse knew he had a horrible temper. But as Danica joked about staying out of trouble for once, Jesse got the feeling that Ares wasn't the only one who had done something drastic.
"That sounds fun," Jesse laughed with her, thinking about all of the poor mortals she was probably intending to kill and torture with her bare hands. That would be a sight to see, to be certain.
"Jesse," he replied, holding out his hand in an invitation to shake hers. "Jesmar but Jesse. I don't prefer my birth name either," he confessed. "So, Danna, I won't pretend like you haven't intrigued me with the atypical opinions you have. Honestly, I think I'd like to see you in action. Like I said, I haven't been to Earth in a while... What if I came with you?"
Danna had his interest, all right. She was so different from everyone else, with her own ideas and her own personality. He found himself wanting to know even more about where she had been, and where she was going. She was barely over a century old, but already Jesse felt like she had more to her than most of the ancient gods he had met.

Her views on things were highly important to Danna. They were always sensitive topics whenever brought up, because no one ever cared much about them or her. Jesse was the first who had shown any interest in anything she had to say, any interest in her at all, and that was enough to make her interested in him. With all of her issues with the major gods, she was sure even the minor gods would disagree with her on things. The others seemed to be enjoying themselves just fine with their powers. They didn’t seem to see that that didn’t make them great. Not in the slightest. Just thinking and talking about it got her all riled up, and it was hard to contain herself from going into a full on rant about the likes of Zeus and Ares and the others. It was hard not to spat out everything she really thought, so many more very passionate thoughts. There was no need to get too crazy yet, though. She didn’t know Jesmar that well yet, and she didn’t need to go around hurting her cause, even if he was making it very easy to want to talk to him about those sorts of things…He was the first to show any interest, and therefore it just encouraged her to go on, though she managed to refrain from doing so.
“It will be,” Danna assured him with a smirk. “I’ve thought about it all!” she said, perking up somewhat. “I wasn’t exactly a happy camper during my exile to Earth, but you can’t really blame me…My father banished me for beating him…Once. Sore loser,” she grumbled with a roll of her vivid emerald eyes. “Anyway, while I was there fraternizing with the mortals,” she said with a laugh, “and two men” (the fathers of her children) “made it very possible to experience all I’ve just told you about. I’ve been thinking about it for a while, but you meet serial killers and gang members and such things and you really get to experience it. I remember…I remember being with one of them and I…He was my lover at the time and this other girl was hitting on him, and being as possessive as I am it turned into an argument and name calling and eventually we went out back to ‘settle’ matters and I…I kicked her ass. I broke her nose…Every last bone in that pitiful nose job,” she snickered. “And she was crying and screaming and bleeding and…I remember feeling so…So very….Powerful. Like I had actually done something. I mean using your powers is like…Like asking someone else to do all the dirty work and that…Physically doing it yourself was a true victory to me. And I…I’ll never forget it. Which is why I know it’ll be great and…Well this time I have lots more plans which I’m sure will be just as satisfying,” she said, pleased with herself before suddenly feeling oddly foolish for having gone on so passionately as she had.
She cleared her throat and introduced herself to get her mind off of her silliness. She had at least been right about who he was, Jesmar, son of Hades and Persephone…Aka Jesse. “I don’t blame you. No offense,” she said, though she didn’t really care much if he was, and she highly doubted he was. “Well it’s nice to meet you, Jesse,” she said with a bright smile. She smiled more and tried to hide it as he went on. She felt particularly proud of herself for getting someone’s interest. Maybe he wasn’t anyone important, but it was better than no one. “Definitely! You should,” she assured him, biting her lip, trying to contain her sudden excitement. “I mean…It would be nice to show someone…So you know…They really get it. And I think you should suffice in keeping me from boredom, just in case,” she said with a smirk, hopping up to her feet and waited on him expectantly. She had been prepared to go when he walked in, so if he was ready, she was up for leaving now.

Jesse couldn't believe his ears, and just barely managed to keep his jaw from hitting the ground. Danna, this beautiful little blonde beside him, his one hundred-year-old cousin, Danna, had beaten Ares, the god of war. Sure, she was his daughter, so fighting was in her blood. But Ares was war, and she had beaten him. She was still so young... they both were, really, comparatively. Jesse was over three hundred years old, and Danna was over one hundred years old... very young for gods. And still, she had beaten him.
Jesse was shocked. He wondered for a moment why everyone wasn't going crazy about this, but then it occurred to him that they, like him, simply didn't know. It made sense that Ares wouldn't want this sort of thing spread around. So that was why she had been banished...
"Wow," he mouthed, shaking his head as she continued. She told about her time on Earth, meeting the serial killers and gang members there, and the more he thought about it, the more Jesse began to see why it had gotten her attention. Mortals got the attention of the gods all the time, and they certainly didn't have any powers. Apparently, they didn't need them to be able to turn the heads of even the most powerful like Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades. Jesse's own father had loved only one woman besides his mother, and she was just a mortal. She hadn't needed powers, either. When he thought of it that way, it did make the gods look weak.
He listened intently while Danna told her story, about some poor bitch hitting on her lover, and how they had gotten into a fight that ended with Danna as the winner. Jesse had seen what she could do to the souls around them, and had a feeling that that was only the tip of the iceberg (because really, who goes all out on a poor pathetic soul?), but she hadn't used her powers at all. She had fought that girl tooth and nail, broke her nose, made her scream and bleed. And Danna was excited about it too, Jesse could tell, and it was really very contagious.
"It's lovely to meet you too, Danna," Jesse chuckled as she smiled brightly at him. She coaxed him to come with her so that she could show him what she meant, and that was really what Jesse had wanted. He had always loved learning, and was eager to discover for himself this power that Danna had experienced.
"Hades is the one that trained me," Jesse told her. "He's busy with my mother while she's here, but in the spring and summer her absence gives him a bit of free time that would otherwise be used on her. I'm the God of Disease, by the way," he clarified before continuing. "He trained me well, but as you would probably suspect, that mostly focused on my powers. He did an excellent job, don't get me wrong, but even when I was on Earth I solved my problems by making people sick. The Black Plague, Yellow Fever, all those horrible epidemics, that was all me. Even now, all the different cancers that they're all afraid of - I came up with them. And it does make me powerful, I suppose, to have such an impact on the mortal world. But I would have never done what you did. It wasn't the way I was brought up," he shrugged. "It just wouldn't have occurred to me."
Jesse laughed when she announced that he should keep her from getting too bored. It was a compliment, he supposed, an amusing one and he took it as such. She jumped up and looked at him pointedly, obviously waiting to see if he really was coming. Jesse hadn't been to Earth in a while... he wasn't as familiar with all the new trends and technology (unless it was medical) as your average mortal would be. But Danna was ready to go, and with her as a teacher, Jesse figured he should be fine.
"What the hell," Jesse decided with a smile, getting up after her and following her out of the Underworld.
