OUR LOVE IS A BED OF NAILS love hurts good on a bed of nails She sighed in some relief as her aching body sank slowly into the scalding water of the bathtub. For a moment her flesh felt as if it were on fire, but after a few seconds the pain passed and her muscles easily relaxed. Her weary green eyes fluttered shut and for a moment she pondered just falling asleep like this, right here. There was no dragon trying to eat her pegasi here or trying to eat mortals who passed by who, through the Mist, only saw him as a large and angry pit-bull. There were no hellhounds or her father or babies or stupid demigods or children or anything that had been worrying her mind all day today. Danna could ask Morpheus for good dreams that didn’t involve any of her irritants at all. Everything would be calm and perfect…Her perfect little world where nothing could go wrong. If she couldn’t really fall asleep, she supposed there was nothing wrong with daydreaming. Abandoning all ideas earlier of soap and shampoo and conditioner, she merely let her body and mind rest in the complete silence of the room, only lit but the flickering flames of the few candles she had lit around the counter.
It had been a long day. Starting off with waking up too early due to morning sickness (way too early for stupid morning sickness). Then they had needed groceries and it had been a bit of a bitch exchanging drachmas for mortal cash (Hermes had spent a good bit of time teasing her for getting herself knocked up and for pissing off Hera and mentioned hearing a rumor Hades had sent an entire army after them). The actual grocery shopping itself was a nightmare with being followed by a small gang of Mexicans who didn’t know any English following them around, trying to be inconspicuous and saying many profane things that let Danna know they didn’t think she spoke any Spanish until she cursed them out in three languages (Spanish included, along with Italian and modern Greek) and proceeded to kick their asses behind the store. Finally she came home to Adrastos trying to eat Dysis and Theone before trying to chase the mailman. The man ran off in fear, but she figured pit-bulls were pretty scary, especially the way Adrastos was going on about it. Luckily she had gotten there in time to calm him down, though it sucked having to hunt down her runaway pegasus. Theone had returned to her stable, but Dysis had run off and had taken a half hour to find her. Runaway horses in Manhattan? Not your usual sight, but she supposed that’s what she got for needing some reminders of home around. A dragon and two pegasi in New York City, the only bit of mythical fun she could locate, and even then trying to tame a dragon enough to get him to follow you was tough. Even now Adrastos could be hard to handle. The only easy pet was Theone, and even then she could be annoying…For a pet.
All of the worry melted away easily, though, as she relaxed in her bath. She had instructed everyone (namely Jesse, though Christian was supposed to stop by later to pick up his forgotten watch and the few nymphs that helped take care of the garden and the animals) to leave her alone unless her life and hers alone was in any immediate danger. She had dealt with enough in life lately, and so far life on Earth wasn’t going much smoother than things on Mount Olympus or in the Underworld. Life was hard, but it had never been as hard as it had been since meeting Jesse. Danna wasn’t sure if she was blaming him or not, but it was a fact and it was one she wasn’t about to deny. Meeting Jesse had been the best thing in her life so far, but it had also been one of the worst. With Jesse she had fallen in love, something she had sworn off right from the start. With Jesse she had risked severe humiliation, something she had experienced not too long ago when they were found on a date by Ares and Aphrodite, her parents. Ares had enjoyed himself poking fun at them while the two denied having any feelings for each other whatsoever. Then after several weeks of straight brutal training, Jesse had shown up to only give her father more to taunt her with. It had ended their relationship for a while and her training with Ares, which only started more gossip about her, gossip that left her feeling embarrassed and defeated. Finally she found out she was pregnant from Hera herself and ordered not to deal with any harsh training, to keep the child alive, but disobeying said orders got her exiled to Earth, more humiliation from the other gods and even more taunting from her father. And as if all of that hadn’t been enough, going to meet Jesse in the Underworld to leave for their trip to Earth she had gotten a very interesting meeting with Hades before the two were chased out of the Underworld by hellhounds.
And it was all because of him. Because of her feelings for him. Because of their relationship. Danna loved Jesse, more than anything, and she had only ever truly been happy in life with him. But that didn’t make things easy…Of course, she’d never say that to Jesse. “Our relationship ruined my life,” tended to put a damper on things. And for the most part, she was happy with him. He made her happy…It was just everyone else’s reactions and his sperm that had done all of this.
“Danna,” said a low, seductive voice, hints of amusement layered beneath it as he spoke. The sound caused her eyes to fly open and she jumped. Danna hadn’t heard anything before that voice…No door creaking open, no footsteps, no nothing but that strangely familiar voice. As she turned to see who it was she felt two large, strong hands pressing down into her shoulders, keeping her sitting in the tub before gently rubbing her tense muscles, causing her to relax against the massage. Her eyes fluttered shut, a low moan of pleasure escaping her mouth at the pleasant feel of it all before remembering this was odd. Opening her eyes she glanced over her shoulder, surprised to meet the clear blue eyes of an old lover, Erebus. His handsome face was as perfect as ever with that beautiful smirk curling the corners of his lips. Danna pursed her lips and raised her eyebrows, trying hard not to smile in return. She wasn’t sure why she was pleased to see him. Then again, he had always been fun.
On another note, he was the god of darkness and he tended to be found in the Underworld. The Underworld, being the domain of Hades who had tried to kill her only a few days ago. She wasn’t sure how Erebus felt about Hades, considering their entire relationship had been a sexual one, and not much talking had been done between the two in their history of knowing one another. She had a feeling he wasn’t here to kill her or Jesse or their baby, but one could never be too sure. Danna knew better than to trust anyone, especially now, with everything that had happened. But she did nothing. She didn’t remove his hands or snap at him to leave or call for Jesse or anything. Danna remained seated in the bathtub, enjoying his hands gently working at her neck and shoulders. Hades had seemed pretty determined to have her in multiple pieces, but she couldn’t bring herself to focus on that hairy bastard for the life of her.
“Erebus,” she said, using the same very soft tone, both seductive and humored at the same time. “Pray tell, what are you doing in my bathroom?”
“Why do you think?” he asked, leaning forward and nibbling her earlobe gently. Jesse was in the house, some distant part of her mind told her. Erebus being here, especially for this, was not a good thing. Perhaps Erebus had run off scared that one day Jesse caught them, but through the grapevine she had heard it was all an act and that Erebus had been spreading all sorts of boastful stories about what a big shot Jesse thought he was, and how he could easily kick that little boy’s ass any time he wanted. As much as she loved Jesse, she had to admit the truth behind his words. Erebus was a primeval god, one of the first and one of the oldest and arguably one of the most powerful. Danna could probably kick Jesse’s ass, so there was no doubt in her mind that Erebus could and would do the same. Despite foreseeing the sort of fight the two might get into if Jesse found out and despite not wanting to hurt Jesse, she couldn’t make herself push Erebus away. Jesse was by far the best of all of her lovers, but that didn’t mean Erebus didn’t have any skill himself and honestly it was refreshing to have someone else touch her this way, especially since she was pregnant.
His hands moved slowly from her shoulders, starting down her arms and Danna laughed. “Careful…You might get wet…” she warned teasingly, licking her lips as his hands disappeared under the water, trailing down her arms before sliding back up to her neck and starting a new journey down her chest. She moaned quietly as he began kissing just under her jaw and along her neck before pressing his lips against her ear, whispering, “I came to see the mother of my child, of course. Once I heard you were knocked up, I figured it was only right I pay a visit…” he finished with a grin. His words had Danna’s brows furrowed in confusion before she slowly opened her eyes again and half glared at him. “You are sadly mistaken, Erebus. It’s not yours, it’s Jesse’s. Besides, I wasn’t sure you were the paternal type,” she finished in a teasing tone, though she was still highly bothered by what he had said, assuming her child was his.
“Do you really think so?” he challenged, and while she wanted to believe it was about him being the paternal type, she had a bad feeling it had more to do with his assumption that he was the father of her unborn child. Danna swallowed and shook her head, sitting up a bit, disturbed that through all of this he was still touching and kissing her. The baby was Jesse’s…Wasn’t it? Danna had been so sure it was, but with this new development…Well…She had been with other men. Being with Jesse hadn’t stopped her, and being away from Jesse sure as hell hadn’t stopped her. From the moment she found out she had been so sure it was his, but…Could she have been wrong?
“Get out,” she said, jerking away from him the best she could, but he never did stop touching her, and only laughed as he kissed her shoulder. She so did not need this right now. Danna had enough to worry about without him putting more bullshit in her head.
Danna jumped, startled once again as the bathroom door burst open, slamming hard into the wall enough to push back forward a bit, but not enough to close. Danna growled in frustration at being caught off guard so often today and it took a moment to register that furious glare Jesse wore as he glared at Erebus who only grinned at him as he slowly stood up. In a flash, both men flew at each other, immediately punching and kicking one another. “Oh my fucking gods would you two STOP?!” she snapped, growling in frustration as the two continued fighting, slamming one another into walls and attempting to pull one another apart. Shaking her head at them, Danna closed her eyes and held her breath, sinking under the water. She did not want to deal with either one of them right now. She had come to take a bath, wanting some peace and quiet. She was half tempted to surface and remind Jesse that he was supposed to leave her alone, but found she didn’t feel like being ignored while the two of them attempted to kill one another. Under water she let out a frustrated scream that was muffled and very audible beneath the water.
Hearing a loud noise, like an explosion, Danna shot back up in a panic. Of course, just annoyed by the two fighting she didn’t consider the seriousness of it all…That Jesse would actually get hurt. Desperately she wiped her wet hair and water out of her eyes, glancing around, trying to see what had happened.
It was at that moment that Danna shot up in bed with a sharp gasp, frantically looking around, half seeing the destroyed bathroom around her that slowly faded back into her bedroom. Her heart was racing out of control and she slapped her hand harshly over her chest to try to calm it down. Everything was perfectly normal. The room was dark but for the green glow of the numbers on the digital alarm clock beside her. 1:23 A.M. Danna cursed under her breath and straightened herself a bit, glancing around the room, everything cast in shadows and darkness. She was almost expecting to see Erebus walk out of a dark corner at any moment or stepping out of the half open closet door. The room remained still, though, and nearly silent but for the now and then grunt or snore coming out of Jesse. Taking a deep breath, Danna slowly let it out to try to calm herself, leaning over to gently kiss the bare skin of Jesse’s back before sitting up straight again and throwing the blankets off of her body and sliding out of bed.
She had gone to bed only two hours ago and she felt wide awake. She blinked furiously in confusion as she walked across the room to the full length mirror, one of the few things cast in the silvery glow of moonlight leaking in through the blinds. Her short pale yellow nightdress was twisted around her body, half of the hem tucked into her dark blue panties. Her blond curls were a wild, tangled mess that assured she had tossed and turned a great deal in her slumber. She looked as though she had been in the middle of the fight between the men instead of hiding underwater. Her green eyes were a dark jade color and wide, as if wired from caffeine or drugs and only the dark shadows beneath her eyes showed any sign of distress or exhaustion. She pulled her nightdress out of her panties and pulled it straight and smoothed down the wrinkles with her hand before running her fingers through her blond hair, trying to untangle the curls the best she could while her frustrated mind ran through everything. It was hard to know what was real. The dream had felt remarkably real and she had to wonder if it had been for a while…And if that had all been a dream, had the events of the previous day been real, or just part of her dream, too? Danna shook her head in confusion and cringed as a particularly nasty tangle was pulled apart.
Once her appearance was fixed she glanced back around the room. Jesse was still fast asleep…Everyone was asleep. The whole neighborhood was bound to be in beds, resting up for long days at work tomorrow. Adrastos, Dysis, and Theone were all sleeping in their respective places in the front and back yards. She was half tempted to call on Erebus for a bit of company, but deciding that she didn’t want to risk any parts of her dream becoming a premonition and instead sighed heavily and shuffled across the room and slipping out, shutting it quietly behind her. She wasn’t sure what she was going to do now. She could go into her office and play on her computer or reading a good book. Perhaps she could put in Cruel Intentions downstairs on her new big screen TV. On second thought, eating sounded pretty good with the rumbling of her stomach and the sudden feeling of starving, when she hadn’t even felt remotely hungry just a second ago. Glaring down at her still flat stomach, she shook her head and mutter profanities under her breath as she walked across the long hallway and downstairs towards the kitchen. She supposed this was better than being woken up by nausea and having to rush to the bathroom to puke her guts out.
This late…Or rather, this early…Things were eerily quiet. She felt very alone and everything seemed so strangely dead. She had been alone before…Alone at night…But it had never felt so strange before. Spooky. She wasn’t one to be frightened by horror films, or anything of the such, but she could feel something stirring in the air, and she wasn’t sure what it was and that bothered her. Especially with the new enemy she seemed to have made in Hades himself. Her eyes darted around the living room suspiciously as she passed through and into the kitchen, flipping on the light there, as well as the one in the dining room and the kitchen. One could never be too sure what was lurking in the dark, especially when you had just had a dream about the god of darkness popping out of nowhere. She glanced around the rooms slowly and upon finding nothing, she figured herself safe enough to open the fridge and pull out the plastic container of leftover spaghetti. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was wrong, but tried to push it aside in favor of scooping noodles and meatballs into a plastic green bowl with a spoon. This stupid baby was going to get her fat…Something expected from pregnancy, but something she wasn’t looking forward to.
While her mind desperately tried to focus on the cons of pregnancy, she kept herself alert. So when she felt something stirring behind her, she spun around, spoon clutched tightly in hand, and glowering evilly when she saw that it was just Jesse. The panic didn’t calm down, though, and instead grew more rapid and more passionate. She found herself suddenly very furious at him and pressed her lips together hard, throwing the spoon at him. “What the fuck, Jesse? Are you trying to fucking sneak up on me or something? Ugh! You’re not very funny, you know that? After everything we’ve been through you could just…Ugh. I don’t know why I even bother with you!” she snapped, hitting the button on the microwave to open it and practically threw the bowl in, harshly pressing the numbers to heat up the spaghetti, shaking slightly in her anger.
Honestly. Did all men have to be assholes?

- - - - - - - - - - - -Jesse exhaled in his sleep when he felt Danna's lips lightly brush against the bare skin of his back, his conscious mind just beginning to remember that there was something beyond the dreams he was currently immersed in. Danna slid noiselessly out of the bed, blankets still half-covering his body after she threw them off. The cool night air hit his skin, but he ignored it in favor of remaining deep in sleep.
He shifted and let out a quiet grunt, the muscles in his back rippling gently beneath his skin. His index finger twitched, and Jesse closed his eyes tighter, not wanting to wake up. His back was chilled, so he rolled over beneath the blankets, reaching out to slip an arm around Danna's middle and pull her into his body. His arm flopped lifelessly against her side of the mattress, making his brow furrow even in sleep. Jesse dug his short nails into the mattress, moving his hand slightly, before opening one dark eye. The room was blurry for a moment, but he could see that the bed was empty except for him. He pushed himself up from his stomach onto his elbows, his eyes narrowed in sleepiness and confusion as he stared at Danna's side of the bed and then to the door, where there was a faint yellow glow coming in from beneath the wood. If he listened closely he could hear soft noises from the kitchen and relaxed a bit. Thankfully it wasn't from the bathroom again. That had not been fun. For Danna, of course, but not Jesse either. He hated seeing her like that, and often found himself unable to suppress a pang of guilt. He did whatever he could to make Danna's pregnancy easier on her, but there wasn't much he could do about morning sickness except hold her hair or rub her back.
That wasn't the case this time, though. She was obviously hungry or thirsty, and at least that was better than throwing up, but he still felt a little bit bad about it. Late night cravings probably weren't fun, either. Jesse sighed and let his face fall back into the pillow with a plop, tempted to just go back to sleep... but he couldn't. Late night cravings were crazy, he had heard, so if she wasn't craving something they had in the refrigerator, he would be taking a trip to the 7-11 or something. That wasn't his biggest concern, though... Jesse's biggest concern was his father.
Jesse hadn't exactly left the Underworld on good terms with Hades. His father was an honorable man to a fault, actually, and expected the same from his son. Jesse was a man of his word, but how was he supposed to know that he would get Danna pregnant and she would be banished to Earth? He was going with her, there was no question about that, and if Hades didn't like it because of some promise Jesse had made almost a century ago, then that was too bad. Of course, it had been too bad. Being chased out by hellhounds, in particular, would be bad. And even after they had escaped, Jesse had known they weren't safe. He doubted that they would ever be truly safe. Especially at night. Hades could be in the house right now and they would never know it; a shadow, passing through the walls and waiting for them to separate so that he would have an easier time of attacking. Of course, they were both terribly young, but strategy was still a good idea.
It was this train of thought that made Jesse groan softly and sit up, stretching and rubbing his dark hair to try and wake himself up. He put his bare feet on the ground on the side of the bed, placed his hands on his knees, and forced himself up. The room was cold, especially as he was dressed only in a pair of sweatpants, but it wasn't too bad. Danna's Manhattan house was practically a mansion, so central heating was a given. He opened the door to the bedroom, squinting against the soft light but followed it, shuffling down the hallway and through the lit living room, dining room, and finally into the kitchen. He was wide awake and alert now, but the light still hurt his eyes, so he barely had enough time to swat a spoon out of the air as Danna began screaming at him.
He looked up at her and saw the fury in her eyes, rage that made his own brow furrow in a scowl. Just what the hell was going on? She could get up, but he couldn't? Every word that left her lips made him angry, his stomach clenching and his chest boiling with a rage that he would have realized as quite unnatural if his mind hadn't been clouded with the emotion. He blinked and scoffed as she snapped at him, insisting that he wasn't funny and wondering why she even bothered with him.
"I don't recall it being a crime to get up in the middle of the night to see if you wanted anything besides fucking spaghetti," Jesse shot back, feeling himself getting easily worked up. "And if you just woke up for a snack I wasn't going to make a ton of noise coming down here! But point taken, next time you wake up at fucking 1:30 in the morning I'll be sure to yell and scream and bang a bunch of shit together so that you know I'm coming down, and maybe then I won't startle you. Gods, I don't know why you bother with me either, I don't make nearly enough noise. I'll work on that," he said sarcastically. "I'M GOING BACK TO BED!!" he shouted, loud enough to rattle the windows a bit and start their pets moving around outside, neighing and growling softly in irritation at being woken up. Jesse scoffed and shook his head, turning to go back upstairs. OUR LOVE IS A BED OF NAILS love hurts good on a bed of nails Something like this should have been anticipated. Her father had made no secret of his displeasure with the idea of his darling Danica being in love, in a relationship, or bearing Jesse’s children. The only person who might have been angrier was Hades, but Ares was the master of anger, it seemed, and Danna had only begun to imagine the sorts of things Ares had done after her departure, and what sorts of things he might try to do. He had made a big show against her relationship ever since finding her and Jesse in Palm Springs together, so him trying to break them up should not have been a shocker, but for once Danna had been more focused on other things and more worried about Hades (since he was the one to stick hellhounds on them), that she hardly even thought about what Ares might do, or plan strategies for dealing with her father. Of course, there wasn’t much someone could do to defend themselves against the god of war. He’d be watching them…Turning them against one another without anything having to come in and attack. It wasn’t about involving other people, it was about turning them against one another. It was so perfect and so very Ares.
As Danna threw her spoon at Jesse, though, she didn’t consider where all of this horrible anger came from. Jesse hadn’t done more than come up behind her, and had scared her a small bit, but it was something that should have easily faded and allowed her to relax and go about normally. That wasn’t what happened, though. She was all of a sudden overcome by this fuming wrath that had no real origin. It couldn’t be just because Jesse had come up behind her, but that was the only reason at all she could grasp onto, and she was using it against him. How else was she supposed to yell at him without any reasons for doing so? Her mind didn’t question it…Not for one second. All she knew was that all of this overwhelming fury that bubbled up inside of her, raging through her blood and bones and needing some form of escape and release. Her head was clouded with nothing but this heated rage and her body trembled slightly in the force of it. She was absolutely seething, for no real reason at all and that was did not seem at all out of the ordinary to her.
Her own anger seemed to have rubbed off on Jesse who began yelling right back at her. Danna rolled her eyes, folding her arms tightly over her chest and she stood rigid against the counter. Her jaw was clenched and her lips were pressed tightly together, her jade green eyes glittering with mischief and rage unlike anything that had been seen in them before. It took a lot of self control not to snap back and start screaming over him. She smirked slowly, a very cold smirk and she slowly shook her head, ignoring the microwave as it began beeping, alerting her that her spaghetti was ready. “I don’t need you checking up on me all of the time, fucking shit, Jesse! I’m a grown ass woman! I’ve been pregnant before, you know, and I’ve been to Earth before and I was alone then, Jesmar. I don’t need a man to protect me or do everything for me! You say you know me and that you love me, but holy hell you don’t even know me! I can very well make food by myself and I don’t care if it’s spaghetti, I actually liked it!” she snapped, growling at his retreating form. “Yes, Jesse, run! Run like the little bitch you are!” she snarled, slamming her fist angrily down on the counter top. “You can’t even handle your pregnant girlfriend, goddamn, Jesse! This is what happens when you knock someone up, Jesse! Mood swings are all apart of the deal! It’s no wonder you killed the other bitches, you gonna kill me, too, you dickwad?! Huh? God you are such a pussy! A real man would know how to put up with shit! But that’s why you went to daddy, didn’t you? Had to let daddy know where baby Jesse was going!” she said in a mocking baby voice. “That’s why we ended up in so much shit, you fucker! Cause you had to go and tell your goddamn Daddy where you were going! Cause daddy’s in control of everything, right, Jesse? You should have gotten PROPERTY OF HADES, tattooed on your ass!” she snapped, glaring at the arm she knew her name was now permanently drawn into.
Once it was all out, though, the anger was gone…As if it had completely disappeared. There was no time to breathe or relax, though, as she was suddenly overcome by yet another emotion. As it had never occurred to her that Ares would try to break them up, it had also never occurred to her that her parents might be at war and that she and Jesse seemed to be the center of it. All that she knew, though, was that she loved Jesse…She loved him more than anything in the world and she felt terrible for what she had just done and said. Her face fell, eyes softening and slowly lightening from the darker jade color to their normal, brighter emerald shade. “Oh, Jesse…” she mumbled softly, feeling quite mushier than she had ever felt in her life. All she wanted to do was hold him and remind him that she loved him more than anything and…
And the microwave beeped again, reminding her that the spaghetti was done.
And like a switch the anger was back. Her face hardened once more and she screamed loudly with frustration. “SHUT THE FUCK UP!” she roared, spinning around and slamming her fist as hard as possible into the microwave door, her feet slamming right through it, creating a rather large whole as her arm pushed through it until her fist hit the back, the flesh of her arm and wrist and hand all of a sudden burning hot from the leftover heat and the steam rolling off of the spaghetti and up onto her arm. Her face twisting up in fury she vehemently snatched the bowl out of the microwave and threw it at Jesse. “There you go, Jesse, since a pregnant girl can’t have her spaghetti you can eat that while you cook me something else. Feel better, darling?” she snarled.

- - - - - - - - - - - -Jesse could not believe how angry he felt. It reminded him of the day they had escaped from the Underworld, and the anger he had felt towards his father, not only because of the way Hades was trying to control him, but because of the way he had treated Danna. His mind clouded with fury, Jesse had felt sure that he could rip even the powerful Hades to shreds at that moment, and that was the way he felt now. He just wanted to destroy something, anything, find some release for this uncontrollable rage that was boiling over inside him.
Danna was screaming at him again, about how she could take care of herself, she didn't need him, blah blah blah. He had only been thinking of her, but apparently she couldn't see that. She screamed and ranted about how he didn't even know her, and all this and that, and when he turned to leave it only infuriated her more. She yelled even louder, and when she brought up his exes and his father, Jesse's eyes hardened completely.
"Well, at least now I know what a waste of time it is to try and be considerate of my pregnant girlfriend," he shouted, spinning around and taking a step forward, his pitch black eyes on fire and glittering dangerously with rage. "Because no good deed goes fucking unpunished, does it, Danna! If you like spaghetti, then more power to you, eat all the fucking spaghetti you want, because from this point on I am not buying a single other ingredient for this goddamn house! It's gonna be noodles and tomato sauce all the way, baby!!" he roared, not caring if any of it made sense. He was too unexplainably furious to worry about how rational he was being, or if threatening Danna with nothing but spaghetti for nine months was actually a useful idea. That should have been his first red flag, as logical a person as Jesse usually was, but for now rational thought had flown straight out the window.
"Mood swings are to be expected, Danna, but you, oh you really take the cake. I've never heard of any crazy ass woman flying off the handle on her man because he was WALKING! And for your information, I believe it was ME who saved BOTH our asses back there from the hellhounds!! My father knows what he wants, but he's not PSYCHO!! In fact, I don't even know why I put up with YOU, going all bonkers over fucking nothing, tattooing your goddamn name on my arm and all that shit! So don't even ask me if I'm going to kill you now too, DON'T TEMPT ME!!" he shouted louder than ever, breathing heavily in the aftermath of his fury.
And at the same moment that Danna's eyes changed, Jesse felt the same thing inside him. Oh, he was awful... how could he even say those horrible things, and what if she thought he meant them? He loved her far too much for any of that to be remotely true... He just wanted to take her and hold her close, kiss her hair and never leave her side, just whisper his love for her and make sure she never doubted it again for the rest of her life. Nothing else mattered in the world but Danna, she was everything to him and he loved her more than he had ever thought it possible to love anything or anyone.
She mumbled his name softly, and Jesse melted at the sound of her voice. "Gods, Danna... I'm so sorry, baby, I didn't mean any of it," he murmured gently, taking another step forward to take her in his arms before the microwave beeped again. Danna whirled around and sent her fist flying through it, shrieking in anger, and Jesse couldn't stand it at all.
"Gods, you broke the fucking MICROWAVE!" he yelled, suddenly feeling far too strongly about the well-being of their household appliances. "HOW ARE YOU GONNA MAKE YOUR FUCKING SPAGHETTI NOW, HUH?! And I know what comes after this, oh yes, you fucking scream and nag and hound me until I buy you another one! WELL, MICROWAVES DON'T JUST GROW ON TREES, DANNA!!" he yelled. He had plenty of money, but that wasn't the point. Even as gods they wouldn't have any at all if she kept going insane and breaking shit.
Danna turned back around and flung her spaghetti at him, and Jesse howled as it splattered across his chest, still steaming. "GOOD GODS WHAT DID YOU DO?!" he demanded, hissing and wiping the hot liquid off of his skin, which was turning as angry red as he felt. "WHY DO YOU HAVE TO HAVE YOUR SPAGHETTI SO GODDAMN HOT!! IT'S NOT EVEN SPAGHETTI, IT'S FUCKING VOLCANO SPAGHETTI, GODS, FUCK!!" Jesse roared, feeling far too furious again to make any sense. "And if you think I'm making you anything after this, you're insane! You're insane anyway, because I'd rather deal with my father and whatever shit he can come up with to punish me for running away with you than sit here and deal with you, Danna!!" Jesse yelled, not meaning any of it but too enraged to realize all of that. OUR LOVE IS A BED OF NAILS love hurts good on a bed of nails They were arguing over spaghetti. It was the most ridiculous thing in the world to fight over, unless you were a married couple who was bored and the only thing that kept things interesting was fighting over stupid shit. This wasn’t normal behavior for people like Danna and Jesse, but neither seemed to realize how severe all of it was or how bipolar both were acting. All Danna knew was that Jesse was being a dick and she didn’t like it. “What the hell are you talking about? I BOUGHT THE DAMN FOOD! I WENT GROCERY SHOPPING AND GOT MY ASS HIT ON BY CRAZY MEXICANS! AND I HAD TO KICK THEIR ASSES OUT BACK BECAUSE MY USELESS PIECE OF SHIT BOYFRIEND WASN’T THERE TO DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT! SEE? I CAN TAKE CARE OF MYSELF, JESSE, BECAUSE THE ONLY THING YOU SEEM TO BE GOOD FOR IS ASKING ME ABOUT MY FUCKING FOOD!” she screamed. “I will finish off the leftover spaghetti, then, if I want, I will go to the store and buy something else because I CAN DO THAT!” she snapped. “See? I don’t even need you for grocery shopping! What do you think you are, my wife?!”
Danna shook her head the moment Jesse started responding to her accusations about everything regarding his father. “Which you wouldn’t have had to do if you were a man and just left! He’s your dad, he’s not your fucking keeper! All he does is mope around there like a little bitch anyway! And I guess it’s like father, like son, huh? All I ever do is hear you bitch! Ugh, it’s like I’m with a woman sometimes, I swear!” she snapped. Her eyes flashed angrily when he brought her into all of it. “If that’s what you think, then why do it, Jesse? I wasn’t holding you down, making you get the tattoo! Maybe I was forceful, but I didn’t go that far. You wanted it! And if I’m so hard to put up with then why don’t you just leave? There’s the fucking door! And don’t even pretend like you could kill me! I could take your ass any day, you fucking asshole! And I would not try me if I were you.”
The switch from anger to extreme love was strangely bipolar, but Danna wasn’t alone in it. Jesse was apologizing and moving closer, but the moment the beeping started, so did the screaming. “THE SPAGHETTI’S ALREADY DONE, YOU FUCKING RETARD! AND I CAN JUST PUT IT BACK ON THE STOVE IF I WANTED TO! GODDAMN IT! I CAN GET A FUCKING NEW MICROWAVE, THEY’RE NOT HARD TO FIND!” she snapped, growling as she ripped off the microwave door to throw at him after sending the spaghetti flying after him. She laughed maliciously as he screamed about volcanic spaghetti. Served him right for being a jackass. “Stop your bitching and BE A MAN ABOUT IT! Fucking shit, Jesse! Coming to check up on me, buying groceries, whining…’oh I’m so sorry, baby’,” she mocked, scoffing. “Could you be any more pathetic? Please! Because this is quite the show, you little fucktard!”
The moment Jesse said he’d rather deal with his father than her, it all changed again. She flinched in pain and bit the inside of her mouth hard at the overwhelming feelings. She loved Jesse…With all of her heart…But he seemed to hate her. She couldn’t deal with this…She needed him. Her jaw trembled slightly and tears welled up in her eyes. She folded her arms hard over her chest to try to keep the feelings in and stop herself from crying. It hurt so much. She needed him so badly, but what could she do? He hated her now…It broke her heart seeing him so angry with her. She hadn’t meant to do any of this…She just wanted him to be happy and to love her back. Was that too much to ask for? A shaky hand flew up to her face to cover the horrible quivering of her mouth and to hopefully muffle any pathetic sounds that might escape. Why did things have to be so hard? She loved him so much…Why couldn’t love be easier? Then….
“WHAT ARE YOU JUST STANDING THERE FOR?! ARE YOU GOING TO CLEAN IT UP?!”

- - - - - - - - - - - -She was absolutely infuriating, screaming about grocery shopping and Mexicans and him being useless. She had gone completely off the deep end, there was no other excuse. Jesse for one could at least remain perfectly rational. He had a right to be so unbelievably angry, what with all the insults and food she was throwing at him. "And do you even know what your "useless piece of shit boyfriend" was doing while you were at the grocery store?! DO YOU?! I was out back because the nymphs YOU HIRED are completely RIDICULOUS, and doing absolutely NOTHING about the goddamn ZOO you just HAD to have! Your shit-faced dragon would have eaten your precious Theone if I hadn't gone back there and calmed his ass down! It was a damn good thing you went to the grocery store by yourself, because otherwise you would have come home to a blood feast and a FAT ASS DRAGON!!" Jesse shouted, barely able to hear her yelling and accusations over his own booming voice. He did, however, catch more shit about his father and that stupid tattoo on his arm, as well as him being like a woman or something.
"Go lesbian then, if you can't handle it!" he screeched. "If you were with a woman in the first place you wouldn't be all knocked up, waking the whole fucking house up in the middle of the night or getting your ass fucking banished from Olympus! And if you wanna take my ass, then let's fucking GO, or are you gonna start yelling at me for hitting a fucking girl, too! A "pregnant" girl," he said mockingly, making quotation signs in the air. "You wanna think I'm a wimp and I'm no good for combat, you go right ahead, and I'll show you RIGHT now! I fought in the second fucking Titan War before you were even BORN; I've gone up against shit you haven't even SEEN, baby," he sneered, putting special emphasis on the word "baby." She was pushing his buttons like crazy, but even more than that, Jesse was just simply furious.
The focus was back on spaghetti as she screamed at him that it was already done, and that she could put it on the stove if she wanted to. Jesse growled, running saucy fingers through his hair in frustration as his black eyes flashed. "Sure, we have a stove NOW, but who knows how fucking long THAT will last with you out of a fucking straitjacket! Who knows, one day I could sneeze or something, and you'll go ape shit and burn down the whole fucking house!! he screeched, ducking to avoid the microwave door that she threw at him. Oh, he was so angry. He could have killed anything, and he wanted to.
He didn't have much time for that, though, as Danna suddenly flinched and her lip trembled. Jesse realized he had gone way too far. Oh, she would never forgive him for this, how could she? After all of those things he had said, especially about preferring his father over her... It was absolutely crazy, she had to see that. Jesse hated his father for what he had done to his lovely Danna, his precious girlfriend and the love of his life. And Jesse had made her cry... he could see the tears forming in her beautiful green eyes, her quivering hand coming up over her mouth to try and hold it all in. He loved her so much, more than anything in the world... What kind of man was he, threatening to fight her and kill her when he loved her so much it hurt?
"Danna..." he whispered, wanting nothing more than to take her in his arms and hold her together, try desperately to fix this and hope she believed him when he told her he loved her. And then someone flipped a switch in them both, and Danna was screaming at him to clean up the spaghetti, the spaghetti that she threw.
"IF YOU CAN THROW IT, YOU CAN CLEAN IT UP!" Jesse roared back, purposefully flinging noodles and sauce off of his chest and all over the place to make it that much harder for her. "And do you know why you can clean it up, Danna?!" he demanded. "Because a woman's place is in the kitchen, cleaning shit up and popping out babies and NOT BREAKING THE FUCKING HOUSE!!" OUR LOVE IS A BED OF NAILS love hurts good on a bed of nails Danna had never felt such blinding wrath in her life. It consumed every inch of her. Rationality ceased to exist and any love she felt for Jesse was so buried beneath the thick anger that it was impossible to see. Her heart had been controlling almost everything up until this point, always at war with her better judgment and always making her follow her heart, for once. But for now her heart and mind were too occupied on the same thing, so blinded by it all that it was impossible to see things right. All she knew was that Jesse was in the wrong and that she hated him. “Let him eat the fucking pegasus, Jesse! I don’t fucking care, there are plenty of pegasi out there for me to have! And what’s so hard about warding off a dragon, Jesse, oh my fucking gods! I calmed him down enough to get him here, what’s so hard about keeping him off? Shit, what kind of a man are you, can’t even take on a fucking dragon?! YOU COULD HAVE FED HIM THE FUCKING NYMPHS OR SOMETHING, I DON’T FUCKING CARE!” she shrieked, desperately pacing the kitchen, eyes eagerly looking for more things to throw at him.
Her face flushed in heated rage and some embarrassment as Jesse went on about being a lesbian. “News flash, Jesse, you didn’t have to come! I’ve been banished before for more ridiculous reasons! Because they’re all nuts! But you could have stayed at home kissing your dad’s hairy ass, that would have been just fine! Or were you looking for a good enough excuse to finally stand up to that dictatorial bastard? If I had never met you at all I wouldn’t be in this fucking mess, this is all your fault! I wish I had never even met you! Because I assure you, my life would be a HELL of a lot better than it is now!” she snarled hatefully, rolling his eyes and clenching her jaw as he went on. “And what good were you, huh? Cant’ have been that old and I highly doubt your dad could kick your mom’s ass, much less train his own son for anything. You and your whole goddamn family are nothing but useless bastards who can only wish you had it better than you fucking do! You haven’t trained with the god of war, Jesmar. You haven’t trained for every hour of every fucking day with that man! You don’t know anything about fighting, or war. You can only dream that you do.”
It was almost tempting to pray to Ares, to ask him to curse Jesse the way he had Percy Jackson once before…For his sword to fail him when he needed it the most, she recalled. Not that she needed it, she was more than confident that she could easily wipe the floor with Jesse’s ass. But not for her, for future reference, just to show him how bad he really was. Have him lose against a fucking demigod or something, for all she fucking cared. Danna kept that in mind as she glared at Jesse. He thought he was better than her, then he was fucking wrong. There were a lot of people she couldn’t beat, but she was more than sure she could overpower some loser like Jesse. She was the daughter of the god of war and he was the son of the god of death…He was just destined to die at her hands, she thought with an amused snort. That would be far too perfect.
Jesse rattled on and Danna rolled her eyes, already sick of hearing him talk. “It was just a fucking MICROWAVE, you fucktard! GET OVER IT! It’s my house, anyway! WHY DO YOU CARE SO MUCH IF I BURN IT DOWN?! It’s MINE to burn down, Jesse. MINE. Not yours, not ours, MINE,” she snapped, ripping open drawers and pulling out large knives, hurling them at Jesse. “These knives are MINE! This house is MINE! Those animals are MINE! Everything here is MINE, Jesse. This fucking baby is mine. And you? YOU are MINE. And you better fucking remember that, Jesse. I have my name stamped right there into your skin. You belong to me so you better fucking straighten up. I can easily replace you, Jesse. But you? You’ll never find anyone like me, so stop your bitching before you end up in really deep shit.”
There was another break…A strange switch from anger to gushy, mushy love that had her in tears. Jesse felt it, too, she could see that. And like the other switch, it never lasted long. They were screaming at each other once again and the moment Jesse spoke, Danna froze. For a moment she was stunned that he had even dared to go there. Her eye twitched slightly and she slowly began forward, glaring hard at Jesse. “Is that what you really think, Jesse? Cause I thought it was our place to keep you bastards in line,” she snarled, her tone icy and dangerous. “I’m not your average, every day woman and apparently not your ideal woman. So why don’t you just fucking leave before I kick you out myself. I don’t need you, Jesse. I could have anyone I wanted…What about…Oh yes…Erebus? He’d be perfect. He’s not really scared of you, you know…He left that day and mocked your name to everyone he could find…Saying how you thought you were so badass but he knows he can take you, Jesse. He is thousands of years old and he has experience you can’t even imagine. Yes, plenty of experience in all of the right areas,” she said with a laugh. She remembered how pissed off Jesse had been when he had caught her with Erebus…And Erebus was one of her better lovers. Then he had been in her dream just last night…It was perfect. Far too perfect to deny. “I should just call him up right now, shouldn’t I? He’s probably alert now that I’ve said his name…Hmmm…Yes I believe he’d be far better for me than you, Jesse. Feel free to run back to daddy now.”

- - - - - - - - - - - -Jesse had never felt so purely irrational in his entire life. Gone were the Jesse and Danna that had gotten along so very well from the beginning, some part of them knowing that they were deeply connected. They were far more deeply connected than Jesse had previously believed two people would be, and that connection was still there, going strong, even if it was taking quite a beating from all the unadulterated rage and insults that they were throwing at each other. But it still held just as powerfully as ever, though at the moment it felt more like a shackle than the beautifully mysterious bond that Jesse shared with Danna. Nevertheless, it was more powerful than what was currently happening between them, and Jesse knew it, or he would have left in the very beginning. Danna had given him multiple opportunities to leave, and yet he hadn't, though he didn't consciously know why right now. All he knew was that leaving wasn't an option and that he was stuck here with with this crazy, enraged woman who appeared to be evoking such a fury in him as he had never felt before in his life.
"AND WHO WOULD HAVE BEEN BLAMED FOR THAT?!" Jesse roared, slamming his fist down on the counter with enough force to make everything sitting atop it quake and rattle. "If your goddamn fucking dragon ate your precious little pegasus, and I was just sitting here doing nothing about it?! Oh, I would have had to deal with some fucking MAJOR shit from you for THAT, Danna!" Jesse growled, obsidian eyes boring harshly into her as she paced back and forth, her face flaming up when he mentioned lesbianism. Jesse smirked, but it quickly turned into a scowl as she began another bout of screaming crazily at him.
"Even if they are nuts, I can't remember anyone giving them as much reason to banish someone as YOU have! I could have stood up to my dad far before all of this SHIT happened, and I still probably wouldn't have been banished because I'M NOT DANICA!" he cried. It didn't make any sense, but he was too angry to do anything but push onward. "I wish I had never even met you either! I should have LET my father's stupid hellhounds do what they were told! All I ever have to do is go back and pretend that I'm sorry, and everything will be perfectly fine for me, in fact, it would be a HELL of a lot better than THIS!! All you do is get crazy pissed about the STUPIDEST SHIT, and you've asked me before how I could expect to put up with it, and NOW I KNOW WHY!" he screamed, growling in fury as she began to rip open the drawers and throw her knives at him. He didn't care if any sliced him on their way by, right now pain was welcome because it was just more of a release for his anger, as well as more of an instigation.
Jesse growled as she screamed that everything was hers, from the house to their baby to him. He dug his nails deeply into his skin where her name was tattooed, ripping harshly and leaving four bleeding gashes that looked like claw marks through the ink. "Skin comes off, Danna!" he screeched, glaring at her. "And you're FUCKING RIGHT!! FUCKING AGAIN!! I'll never find anyone like you, so I have nothing to lose, and if I NEVER SEE YOU AGAIN IT'LL BE TOO FUCKING SOON!!" Jesse shouted, but even as he released more and more of his fury, more kept bubbling up. Ares had a firm hold on both of them, and they were rampaging like rabid animals.
Which was exactly how Jesse felt when Danna mentioned Erebus. He had turned to go, even though that connection pulled him just as forcefully back, but when she mentioned his rival he stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes flaming white-hot. Jesse was fury, he had ceased to exist as anything but. Erebus was thousands of years older than him, had made a fool of him, and Jesse knew deep down that he could never physically face off against someone that experienced. Oh, but that wouldn't stop him from trying, because once something was yours, something this important, you spent the rest of your life fighting to keep it. Jesse knew this, deep down in the depths of his soul, and he would fight for Danna until the day he died. More likely than not his death would be because he was fighting for her. She was his, not Erebus's, his, and it was about time she understood that.
Jesse turned around slowly, black eyes sparking and glittering with unshed fury, fury that he was now holding inside himself. He had returned to the dangerous, calculating anger that was his own, and as he looked at her there was a possessiveness and a passion in his eyes that was incomparable to anything that had come before. He bared his teeth and actually snarled at the mention of Erebus's name.
"You are mine," Jesse growled, the sound hissing and quiet but filled to overflowing with power and authority. Everything that was in him was behind that sentence, that tone, and he took one step forward, then another and another, until his lips were crashing down onto hers, his hands gripping firmly at her hips and pushing her up to sit on the counter. He growled and sank his teeth into her lower lip, shoving her nightgown up and scratching his nails down her torso. Fuck tattoo artists, he would have etched his name into her skin with his own nails if he had had more control. But regardless, there would be no further question about who Danna belonged to.
Danna belonged to Jesse.

OUR LOVE IS A BED OF NAILS love hurts good on a bed of nails Finally she felt calm. Danna sucked in deep breaths, relaxing on the counter and leaning back against the wall and cabinets behind her. Her body felt calm and all of that incredible anger was gone, as was the strange mushiness that seemed to have randomly attacked. Her head was still buzzing and clouded in the aftermath of her orgasm and in the afterglow of what had to be the most intense sex of her life, she felt great. They had both been so worked up, so taken over by that rage and that desire that they had needed some sort of release and what had to have been the most violent and angry sex she had experienced had been the answer. For now, though, she felt numb and good for the first time since all of this had started. “Hmm…” she hummed quietly, feeling the need to say something, but having nothing to really say right now, her mind still too gone to think straight.
Sighing, Danna sat up a bit and gently pushed Jesse aside so she could slide down, picking up her torn panties and ripped nightgown and sighed heavier now, tossing the panties in the trash can and pulling the nightgown over her head. It wasn’t so bad. One of the spaghetti straps was ripped and there were a few tears and holes, but it was still intact enough to wear for now. “Feeling better?” she snapped, feeling somewhat irritated, but nothing to match what had just taken place. She wrinkled up her nose, looking around to examine the kitchen. The microwave door was broken, the cabinets were dented or broken, spaghetti was all over the floor. She raised her eyebrows, slowly recalling the fight that had taken place not too long ago. What had it even been about? Danna shook her head and rubbed her temples gently. Him sneaking up on her and spaghetti…Nothing serious at all, and yet they had claimed to hate one another, wishing they had never met one another, and all sorts of horrible things.
But why? Where had it come from? She remembered being calm one moment and immediately flying off the handle the moment Jesse walked in. Then those weird breaks when the anger would melt away into gushy, soft, warm love. They were fucking bipolar. Or suffering at the hands of a higher power. Her jaw clenched as she glared upward. “Thanks Mom and Dad, I really fucking appreciate it,” she grumbled, sighing as her stomach grumbled again. She had never eaten the spaghetti. Mentally cursing her interfering parents, she trudged over to the fridge and pulled out a packet of lunch meat. It wasn’t exactly the preferred choice, but the only cooked spaghetti was on the floor and the microwave was broken. “My dad must really not want us together,” she sighed, pulling out a slice of lunch meat and shoving it in her mouth. Baby needed to eat.

- - - - - - - - - - - -Jesse panted heavily against Danna's neck, though as they continued to come down he began to catch his breath. Danna hummed softly as she came down as well, and Jesse slid his arms from around her to brace his weight against the counter. He felt both wonderful, and awful. For one thing the anger and the tension was gone, as was that insane desire that had completely overwhelmed his control. Every part of his body hurt, whether it was his aching muscles or some part of him that Danna had injured. It was a relaxing pain, though... everything just felt so relaxing in the aftermath of all that craziness.
Danna pushed him away a bit so she could get down from the counter, and he easily let her, blinking as he came back to reality. His eyes faded from that glittering, dangerous black to their normal deep chocolate color, and as Danna moved a bit around the kitchen he looked at her in awe. She was bruised... even bloodied. There was a terribly dark hickey on her neck that looked more like someone had whacked her with a baseball bat than anything else. Her lips were a bit swollen, and there were red welts down her stomach and back, as well as five perfect little crescent-shaped wounds on one hip. Had he done all of that...? He had to have done it, there was certainly no one else who could have... Jesse couldn't believe it... What the hell had happened?
Of course, Jesse looked just as bad. There were scratch marks all over his body, bite marks on his skin, and as he wiped his mouth his fingers came away with blood on them. His knees were bruised, his back was bleeding... they both looked more like they had been in a street fight than just having sex.
Danna snapped at him, asking if he was feeling better, though her tone didn't carry the same sharpness in it that it had before. The tension was nearly gone, and everything began feeling right again, which only added to Jesse's confusion. He shook his head, running a hand through his dark hair and absently bent to pick up his rumpled sweatpants. He pulled them back on, glancing up at Danna as she murmured to the heavens. Of course...
Jesse was instantly reminded of the first time Danna had thought she was pregnant. She had gone completely off the deep end, much like she had this time, throwing everything in the house at him and screaming that she hated him. It still wasn't as bad as it had been this time, but it was only situation Jesse knew of that was comparable to what had just happened. He had learned after she had taken her second pregnancy test that it had been Ares messing with her, heightening her anger and making her act that way. And Ares hated Jesse, Jesse had recently knocked up his daughter, and now they were here together on Earth until the baby was born. Danna had told him as well of the war that was taking place between her parents, which would account for the strange mushiness that had overwhelmed the anger at times... Of course. Looking at it now, it was all so obvious.
Jesse looked at Danna, sighing as he came to terms with what had happened. He hadn't been himself, she hadn't been herself, and none of those things that either of them had said were true. It had just been Ares screwing with them, turning them against each other in hopes of breaking them up. Jesse shook his head. How could he have been so stupid, letting his anger get ahold of him like that. It had happened before - Jesse was a rational thinker, but once he was angry there was no stopping him. It couldn't be that way anymore. He had made an enemy of the God of War, and weakness, especially in this area, was a luxury he could not afford. He would have to be even more on his toes from now on, keeping his mind sharp and his eyes open for anything that could be interference. His relationship with Danna was the subject of more than a few gods' wrath, and he had a feeling that they would be constantly bombarded with all sorts of attacks. They would have to be smarter, somehow, and always remain one step ahead.
Danna sighed, voicing the very thoughts in Jesse's head - that Ares must really not want them together. She plopped a slice of lunch meat into her mouth, obviously still a bit aggravated, but so was Jesse. It was just slightly irritating to learn that someone had been using you as a puppet, trying to take away from you everything that mattered most, and you didn't even realize it. Jesse sighed and chuckled bitterly, scratching the back of his head as he came up beside Danna.
"He's just going to have to get used to it," Jesse replied, slipping a strong arm around Danna's back and not caring at all if Ares was listening. His voice was tired... Jesse himself was exhausted after everything that had just happened, not to mention the fact that their kitchen was completely obliterated. He would clean it up in the morning, he supposed. Right now, he didn't want to do much of anything at all. He was determined, though. Tired, yes, but more determined than ever that any mucking around or meddling from the gods would not separate him from the woman he loved.
