The first step to getting help was admitting there was a problem, and Helen Emerson knew very much that she had a problem. She knew something had to change, but she just couldn't say no..it was the same story every night. Her friends would beg and plead for her to go out with them. She'd always refuse them at first...but eventually she would give in...and as bad of am idea as she knew it was, she always went out with them...to a club, or bar, last night it had been Cartie's house. One drink had led to another, and after that...most of the night was a blur.
She has woken up the next morning, with a throbbing headache and having no idea where she was. Of course as reality started to catch up to her, confusion turned into panic..she had stayed out all night, her Father was going to kill her. After locating her phone, she texted Melanie, wanting to know how much trouble she was in. She wasn't though...which was something she never would have guessed. But apparently Melanie had covered for her...telling their Father she was stating at a friends house to work on an assignment.
Maybe it would seem like just an excuse to most. Their Father however was never around, focusing more on his work than the two of them. The only good thing about that, he tended to trust them a lot more. He didn't know them very well...didn't know the lives that they lived...most cases, Elena hated her Father's job. Yes it made him happy, but it seemed he loved that even more than his kids. It was amazing that he even remembered her birthdays. Many would say all of Elena's acting out was her way of trying to get to her Father...but even as she was self destructing, he didn't notice.
She had been awake for two hours now, enough time to collect herself, get cleaned up and leave. Her Father wouldn't be home...he never was, but he wasn't the one she was afraid to face. He didn't know what she was becoming...but Melanie did. Her sister was the most important person to her and she could only imagine what her sister thought of her...what she would say. That's why she simply couldn't bare to go home, not like this. Of course either way Melanie knew what had happened. She sighed under her breath, brushing a loose strand of hair from out of her face.
Instead of going home, she had decided to go to the mall...the first place that she could think of. She walked around in silence, a Grande Carmel latte in her grasp. Usually she was rather stylish with her fashion, but today it couldn't have been more basic. A white tee shirt, ripped jeans, and a pair of heels to go along with it. She bit down upon her lower lip, glancing around what she could see. She for once wasn't in the mood to shop...but she simply didn't want to be alone...maybe they were all strangers, but she preferred it that way..people who didn't know her...wouldn't judge her. With a quite sigh, she took a seat on the edge of the fountain that was in the center of the mall.

UP UNTIL NOW I HAD SWORN MYSELF THAT I'M CONTENT ( ( W I T H L O N E L I N E S S ) ) b e c a u s e n o n e o f i t w a s e v e r w o r t h t h e r i s k - - - & & BUT DARLING YOU ARE THE[/i] T H E O N L Y E X C E P T I O N It had been another long day for Lucas Xavier Myles. Classes had just started up for him again, and getting back into the swing of things after a nice winter break was hard for anyone, even a border-line workaholic like Luke. It was only his second spring semester, and by now he was getting more used to the college way of doing things as opposed to the high school way, so at least he had that on his side.
His Logic teacher, Mr. Coffman, had apparently no "off" switch, though. Coffman had come back from break in full swing, as if there hadn't really been a break at all. It was an illusion he seemed certain applied to his students as well, and besides a brief "welcome back" rabbit trail on the first day of the spring semester, the man gave no indication that a break had taken place at all. He drove this point home by immediately saddling them with loads of homework - only a few questions, comparatively, but they required a good deal of thought, and backing up your conclusion once you came to one.
This was how Luke had spent his Saturday morning - doing homework. It wasn't fun, for sure, but if he wanted to get good marks for the semester it was necessary to start off strong. Even a hard worker like Luke had his faults, one of which was getting lazier as the end of the semester came closer. It was good to excel at the beginning, and leave himself some cushion for a few slips near the end.
A long morning of homework deserved a reward, he felt, so he had treated himself to a trip to the mall for lunch. Sonic, his favorite fast food restaurant, was there after all. He ordered his usual and decided on a whim to stop by Starbucks as well - he could use a pick-me-up after all of that thinking. He waited in line while a blonde woman ordered before he did, a Grande Caramel Latte. She seemed sort of out of it, so when she gave a too-large bill and forgot her change, she left without seeming to hear the cashier calling after her.
"I'll catch up with her," Luke assured the cashier. She looked a bit suspicious at first, but handed him the money. He paid quickly for his own drink and started off after the woman. He could just barely see her through the Saturday crowd, but managed to squeeze in between people and keep her in sight. She ended up at the fountain in the center of the mall, which was where Luke finally caught up with her.
"Hey," he called, slightly breathless as he approached her and sat down beside her. "You forgot your change back there," he told her, pulling the money out of his pocket.

Maybe on some level it was very childish, all this acting out she was doing. Even if at first she never planned on doing it all on purpose. Though it seemed everything she did, it wasn't enough. She'd probably have to end up dead or in the hospital for her Father to finally notice. Christopher Emerson loved hi daughters very much. But even that wasn't quite enough for her anymore. He had to love them..,they were his daughters after all. He by no means acted as a Father should..he was a very wealthy business man...and because of theat, he was always at work..
Then there was her Mother...who even though she's a goddess, may very well have been worse than her Father. It wasn't required or expected for gods to constantly be around their demigod children. She got that, that wasn't why Elena had a problem with her. It was the fact that she had no idea who her Mother was, her Father hadn't know and Elena had never gotten the chance to meet her. At camp Half Blood, she was in cabin eleven...the cabin for Hermes demigods as well as the unclaimed ones...it was a bit upsetting, that her Mother couldn't even claim her and Melanie as her daughters...
So maybe all of this was to get their attention, but it didn't seem to be working and no she was left not knowing what to do. The only person who even noticed was Melanie, the one person that she didn't want to. Because unlike most people, she actually cared about what her sister though. Melanie could be rather rough around the edges, rather bossy, stubborn, but in all honesty, she could be a good person. Elena hated disappointing her like this, but she had no idea how to stop this...she tried, she really was trying.
Every night she promised it'd be the last time...but never was. It was sad that because of her reputation...she was afraid to tell people her first name..Helen...and nearly every single guy she met made some sort of comparison or reference to Helen of Troy. Which always translated into only seeing her as a piece of ass. At the age of thirteen, it was when she had started going by Elena. She couldn't help but to sighunder her breath. Her focus on the fountain behind her, she shook her head and turned back around. Looking down at her hand, to the cup in her grasp.
She needed to go soon, a fact the she was very much dreading. She simply couldn't hide out at the mall forever, no matter how appealing that sounded. Shopping was one of the things she loved to do...though if she were being honest, she didn't do a whole lot of clothes shopping here. More highend fashion locations were what she usually went for. But today it wasn't about shopping, she had just wanted a public place. As odd as that seems, most people when they were as dreaded out as she preferred to be alone.
Though solitude in a place like this, she shouldn't have expected it to last. A boy walked over, only to sit down beside her. All thoughts of getting up and walking away vanished from her mind when he explained why he was there. She had forgotten her.. Setting her cup down on her otherside, she grasped her purse, opening it up, only to realize that he was right. "oh my gosh...wowww I did, didn't I?" She asked, laughing as she spoke. Trying to brush off just how stupid she felt for doing something like that.
Part of her assumed that he had simply wanted to tell her that and now she'd have to go and get the change. It was foolish to waste money like that but...she didn't want to go back and face the cashier. 'yeah, hi, I'm the girl who we stupid enough to walk off without getting change for her fifty dollar bill' she shuddered at the thought, yeah...no thank you. Of course she didn't to go back. "You didn't have to do that...but thank you so much," She paused, taking back the money and slipping it inside her purse. "I'm Elena.."

UP UNTIL NOW I HAD SWORN MYSELF THAT I'M CONTENT ( ( W I T H L O N E L I N E S S ) ) b e c a u s e n o n e o f i t w a s e v e r w o r t h t h e r i s k - - - & & BUT DARLING YOU ARE THE[/i] T H E O N L Y E X C E P T I O N As a budding lawyer, Luke loved to see things come to a neat and tidy close after justice was served. He was only nineteen, but he couldn't wait to win his first case, and feel the accomplishment of knowing that he had made a difference. He didn't necessarily want to fight for the people that were actually in the wrong, no lawyer did, he was sure. But that was part of the job, a small con when set against all of the pros. He couldn't wait to hear the judge rule in his favor, for the jury to watch, smiling, while his client jumped up and gave him a great big bear hug for bringing them fairness, or perhaps even saving their life. He could almost hear the crowd clapping, the reporters clamoring to ask him how he had won, could nearly see the flash of one hundred cameras... But really, truly more importantly than the fame and the money would be the satisfaction, the feeling of accomplishment that would come with winning the case and watching justice be served.
If it meant dealing with teachers like Coffman, Luke would do it in a heartbeat. He would keep that dream in his mind all the way through his boring math classes, demanding English classes, up until the day that he would graduate with his degree, and hopefully more than a few law firms interested in making him the newest addition to their company. He would be able to take care of his grandparents and himself, perhaps even have a family of his own, and doing what he loved would bring in enough money to keep them all living comfortably. Or, if Luke dreamed even bigger, more than comfortably. It would be hard work, and he knew there would be times where he would be up all night, reading and rereading the evidence and making his case flawless, but Luke had never been one to shy away from hard work. Everything would be worth it in the end, and it was moments like this one that reminded him of that.
Perhaps it was just a small thing. Forty dollars was a big deal for a day, maybe even the better part of the week, but it was tiny in comparison to saving the life of someone who was on Death Row, or perhaps clearing a father's name so that he could see his children again. Still, giving this girl back her change was fairness done, however small, and it did give Luke that sense of accomplishment that he so craved. He smiled a friendly smile as she realized her mistake and took the change. He nodded at her thanks, feeling very good about what he had done.
She introduced herself as Elena. It was a unique name, one that Luke hadn't heard many times before, if at all. He set his burger down beside him and held out his right hand to shake hers firmly. "Lucas," he said, "or 'Luke' is what I usually go by." He picked up his sandwich and held it up, glancing back at her. "Mind if I hang out?" he asked, a pleasant, albeit uncertain smile on his face, as if he were almost expecting her to say no.

'Good' people were very rare to meet these days. No one would do what the boy had just done for her. They'd either just ignore it all together, or claim to do as he and simply take the money for themselves. Now she on the other hand...she wouldn't have taken the money for herself. And it wasn't just because her Father was extremely wealthy, she simply couldn't steal like that. What he had done, maybe it wasn't a big deal to some, but she felt like she owed him now. But who knew how she could repay him...
Giving a bit of the money he had returned to her was a thought that had crossed her mind...but she had decided against it for several reasons. Who knew how he'd react to it. Some could see it as an insult, though intentions would be nothing but good. He had done something for her and now she had to return the favor. Well actually she didn't 'have' to, but she very much wanted to. Not to mention it was going to bug her until she came up with a decent enough idea. A quite, nearly inaudible sigh escaped her lips.
She brushed a loose strand of hair out of her face, simply as a way to give her something to do. Elena wasn’t sure why she felt like this, so…she couldn’t even quite explain it. Normally she just radiated confidence, one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet. Being hung over did tend to have a negative effect on a person’s personality. She just hoped that he didn’t notice that. Maybe he was still just a stranger, but he seemed nice and she didn’t want him to think of her as the pathetic drunk girl. Of course he probably already thought that she was weird.
Elena had to change or something…she just couldn’t keep doing this…and it was only getting worse.. To be honest she was lucky that she hadn’t ended up the hospital…That she had never overdosed, never been raped…Of course when had she ever said no when she was wasted. It was a very sad but true fact. She was a whore, in a sense, sober she had more than enough self control…The sound of her phone buzzing lightly in her phone brought her from out of her thoughts though she didn’t bother to answer it. It was either Melanie…or one of her friends. She wasn’t in the mood to deal with her friends, as for Melanie…her sister was probably about to strangle her.
”Well which do you like more?” She asked, referring to his name, it was Lucas but he went by Luke…Was it what he preferred or was it just what everyone called him,. She shook her head after a moment, smiling faintly as she did so. ”Sorry…that was probably a really weird question. It’s just my name is actually Helen, but I go by Elena…Helen, most of the time it’s the end of many jokes of pickup lines. It’s kind of annoying.” She said, her words coming out before she really thought about what she was saying. That was something she had never told anyone, not even her sister. So why him?
It felt like she could trust him, there was just something there…and she felt like she could talk to him. Maybe they had just met, but people like that in her life were very few and far between, especially not boys. They were more interested in getting in her pants than getting to know her. It seemed there were motives behind his kindness and for now that’s what she’d believe. ”Oh no, I don’t mind at all. I can’t possibly send away my rescuer?” She replied laughing just after she finished speaking. It was a bit silly to say, but she couldn’t help it, it was just Elena being herself. ”So, are you from around her?” She asked a moment later, her blue eyes glancing to the fountain before turning her focus back to him.

UP UNTIL NOW I HAD SWORN MYSELF THAT I'M CONTENT ( ( W I T H L O N E L I N E S S ) ) b e c a u s e n o n e o f i t w a s e v e r w o r t h t h e r i s k - - - & & BUT DARLING YOU ARE THE[/i] T H E O N L Y E X C E P T I O N Luke smiled and unwrapped his sandwich, pushing the ingredients around a bit on the bun. He glanced at Elena, then laughed as he aligned the meat and the toppings. "It always bugs me how the toppings and everything are all skewed to the side and stuff. It shouldn't be this hard to make a sandwich with a straight stack of ingredients," he teased, placing the top bun back on the burger before taking a bite.
There was a small pause in the conversation, as was to be expected when two people who had just met tried to talk together. Luke took the time to look over at Elena, taking in her appearance. She was pretty, a blonde with a nice tan and an attractive face and body. She looked a bit disheveled, as if she had had a late night last night, but in a way it looked good on her. It made her look relaxed and comfortable, and to Luke that was even more sexy than if she had tried to look hot.
He took another bite while she asked about which name he preferred, then explained why she had asked. She said her real name was Helen, but that she went by Elena for the sake of her own sanity. Luke shook his head and swallowed before laughing good-naturedly. "Yeah, I guess that could get old," he chuckled. "Okay, so note to self: clever use of the name "Helen" is not the way to pick Elena up," he said, winking teasingly at the girl beside him. "Now let's see, which name do I prefer..." He pondered the question, turning his burger over in his hands while he thought about it. "I guess to tell the truth, I like the way my grandma does it. She usually calls me Luke, but when she's being serious with me or the situation is serious, she'll call me Lucas. I always thought that was kind of neat. It probably sounds weird, though. Kind of a strange way to answer the question," he chuckled, taking another bite.
Luke smiled as she officially allowed him to stick around. He could have gone back to the food court and found a table, sure, but it was nice here, with Elena, by the fountain. The rushing water was a pleasant sound, and the pretty blonde beside him was much better company than an empty chair. "Thanks," he replied. "And yeah, you could say that. I actually go to Columbia University. They've got a good School of Law there. I'm in my second year," he told her. "What about you? Do you go to school or anything in New York?"

Elena's head was throbbing, something that came after a night full of partying. It really did suck but right now there was obviously nothing that she could do about.,So instead she tried to get herself to focus upon other things. She needed sleep, but in order to that she first needed to go home. As comforting as her own bedroom sounded right now, she couldn't go home just yet. Before she could do anything else there, she'd have to face her sister. That wasn't something that she really wanted to.
She had a distraction though right now, though she didn't see him as just that. Even if she did want to leave, she couldn't leave him, not yet at least. The sandwich in his hands was where he focus was. A smile on her lips, nodding her head all the while. "Awe now don't be too hard on them. Sandwich making can be pretty complex." she said a playful wink while she spoke to him. "But yeah I actually agree, it's rare for it to be exactly right." Always in a hurry to move on to the next order, restaurants, especially fast food could be just awful.
Elena personally liked to cook herself, but that didn't mean she didn't like to go out every once in a while. She brushed a strand of hair from out of her face. Lifting the cup to her lips she took another drink. Food didn't sound like a half bad...she couldn't remember the last time she'd had anything to eat. Lunch yesterday, maybe? She didn't feel hungry at least...and who knew if she'd be able to keep anything down. She'd have time to find out later. For now she didn't want to leave him, even if it was only for a few minutes.
Lucas wasn't like other boys, a fact that she could easily see and by no means was that a bad thing. It was rather refreshing to be honest. To have someone to talk to and know they were actually listening. He seemed to be genuinely interested in her and not just what she looked like. Something that couldn't be said for a lot of people. Elena honestly didn't see what most people did. She didn't see herself as ugly, but she didn't think she was attractive as a lot of people said.
Her name was just part of that 'curse', which was why she tended to avoid using it. It cane as a surprise to herself that she told him the truth...but she didn't regret it. At least he didn't make her regret it. The exact opposite, his response actually brought a smile on to her lips. "Well actually if it is clever I might listen. But they never are, though most seem to think that are." She shook her head, this was something she hated thinking about but he...was different.
But what she liked even more was when the subject returned to him. Because she was truly interested in what he had to say. "No, no..I actually don't think that's weird at all. I think it's really sweet actually." She set her cup down, resting her hands in her lap a moment later. "My sisters does something like that, she doesn't say my full name unless She wants me to know I'm in trouble." Like today for example, Mel was going to strangle her she was sure. Everything around them seemed to vanish, at least that's how it was for her. Nothing else was there but him, and she was more than okay with that. "School of Law, wow that's really impressive. Maybe this is a stupid question but are you trying to be a lawyer? Or something else?"
"I go to a private school..one of the best in the area...or so they say. I'm a senior."
