ABOUTME: Upon first meeting Kaia, one might think that she’s a very shy and naïve girl. She’s sweet once she opens up, and if you can get her to trust you you have a friend for life. She’s incredibly loyal and does whatever she can to make her friends and sisters happy, often putting them before herself. Her shyness and tendency to not trust people keep her as a bit of a loner, though. She doesn’t have many friends, and spends a lot of her time reading. She loves her life, but reading opens the door to other worlds and other lives through the eyes of other people, and Kaia loves to lose herself in a good book.

One might also expect Kaia to be a fearful or dependent type of person, when really she is not that at all. She learned to take care of herself as best she could at a young age, although she didn’t have the tools and techniques for defending herself like she does now, and that lacking got her into trouble before. But now, Kaia is a very capable Hunter of Artemis. She lives mainly in the forest and has hunted her share of fearsome monsters in the year or so that she has been a Hunter. She’s talented with her bow and almost never misses, and she is brave in the face of danger. She also has an excellent memory, which is both a gift and a curse.

GOODMEMORY: Kaia’s best memory came right after her worst. After the horrifying experience of being raped multiple times by multiple boys, Artemis’s Hunters finally came and saved her. They took her in and promised that she would never have to go home, and that she could live forever if she promised never to fall in love. Kaia hurriedly agreed, and her new family helped her through her troubled time.
BADMEMORY: Kaia was coming home from the library at night when a bunch of boys in her grade showed up and began to taunt her. They started to hit her and hurt her, and finally they all ended up raping her. It hurt horribly, and it took weeks for Kaia to heal physically. Mentally, she still hasn’t healed completely.
HISTORY: Donna Koehler only ever quit sleeping around like a whore when she got herself knocked up. She wanted an abortion, but didn’t have the money, so reluctantly decided to keep the baby. She never got attached to Kaia when she was born, and could really care less what happened to the girl. They were poor and lived in a tiny apartment barely big enough for one person, let alone two, and what little money they had was usually spent on cigarettes and alcohol and drugs before anything else.

Kaia pretty much had to raise herself. She hated school when she had to start going – she was teased endlessly for her dirty and worn clothes. One boy, Ryan Deutsch, was particularly mean to her. He and his unofficial girlfriend, Karen Stevens, made Kaia’s life miserable. They would always point out every hole in her clothes and laugh when she had had to wear the same shirt several days in a row. The teachers stood up for Kaia, but they couldn’t make friends for her. She was shy by nature, and after the other children were convinced that she was practically a disease, friends were hard to come by.

As Kaia grew older, the jokes began to take on more of a sexual nature. Unfortunately-placed holes and too-small clothing made the harassment that much worse. Kaia felt ugly and worthless, and spent as much time away from everyone else as she could. Her only solace was in books, where she could forget about everything around her. Of course she didn’t have much money to buy her own books, so she spent a lot of time at the library. One night two years ago, as she was coming home, Ryan and a few other boys that followed him loyally came upon her. They teased her and laughed as always, and with it being dark and no one else around, they grew bolder. They started to throw rocks at her and laughed when she cried out in pain. Finally Ryan hit her across the face with his hand, calling her a “stupid bitch” and a “filthy whore.” The other boys started in on her too, until Ryan did something else. He dropped his pants and ripped Kaia’s off, and raped her. He told the others how good it felt, and Kaia was weeping from pain and embarrassment as the rest of them raped her as well. There was no way she could get away.

She lost count of how many times they had done it until a group of girls showed up and chased the boys away. They tended to Kaia and told her who they were. They promised love and protection and family, as well as a life of immortality if she joined them, though they traveled often and none of them could ever fall in love. Kaia didn’t care. She felt like this was everything she ever wanted, and she quickly agreed to join them. She learned fencing and archery, and how to hunt the monsters that plagued the world. She learned quickly about Greek mythology, and strives to become one of the best Hunters that Artemis has ever had. These past two years with them have been the best in Kaia’s life, and she couldn’t be more grateful to the goddess and the rest of the Hunters.
