HISTORY:Hades spent his childhood in his father’s stomach with his other siblings except for Zeus. He is the oldest child of Kronos and Rhea.
Zeus finally convinced Kronos to release his brothers and sisters. Soon afterward, Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades joined forces to overthrow their parents and the rest of the Titans. The Cyclopes assisted the three young gods, bestowing the thunderbolt upon Zeus, the trident upon Poseidon, and the Helm of Darkness upon Hades. Hades put on the Helm of Darkness, which caused him to become a shadow, and he sneaked over to destroy the Titans’ weapons. The war lasted for ten years, with the younger gods finally coming out victorious. The three brothers drew lots for the realms of the heavens, sea, and the underworld, and Hades was assigned to be Lord of the Underworld.
After this, he came upon Persephone, the daughter of his sister Demeter. He fell in love with her and abducted her, bringing her back to the Underworld with him. At first she hated him, but he was very kind to her and wanted very much for her to love him. He tried to buy her love with gifts, but it didn’t work. Next, he tried spending every minute of his free time with her, trying to make her happy.
Persephone, being the goddess of spring growth, couldn’t stay in the Underworld forever. The people’s crops would not grow without her, and the Earth was barren while she remained in the Underworld. Finally, Zeus could no longer ignore the cries of the mortal people, and commanded that Hades give Persephone back to her mother. Hades agreed, but first he convinced Persephone to eat six pomegranate seeds. Because she had eaten food in the Underworld, Persephone was tied to it forever. She returns to Hades for six months of the year, and her absence and return creates fall and winter, and then spring and summer. Eventually, she came to love and respect Hades.
Hades missed Persephone terribly during the spring and summer months, and entertained himself with mortal women while she was gone. Persephone disliked this, and Hades was apologetic toward her about the girlfriends he had while she was away. Not so long ago, Hades actually fell in love with a mortal woman named Maria de Angelo. She bore him two children, Bianca and Nico. Around this time, a prophecy was circulating about a child of either Zeus, Poseidon, or Hades overthrowing the Olympians. Zeus, Posiedon, and Hades made a pact on the River Styx to not have any more demigod children, and Zeus demanded that Hades give his children over to Camp Half-blood to be trained for their own defense. While Hades agreed, he suspected that Zeus had an ulterior motive, as the brothers had never been on good terms. Indeed, Zeus destroyed the building that housed Maria, Bianca, and Nico. Hades was able to save his children, but Maria was instantly killed. Hades wiped the memories of his children and hid them in the Lotus casino for protection. Hades was enraged and targeted Delphi, who gave the prophecy. He imprisoned her in her current host, whom she died with.
At the beginning of the Percy Jackson books, it was thought that Hades had stolen Zeus’s Master Bolt. Hades was visited by Percy Jackson and his friends, and revealed that his Helm of Darkness was also missing. He had sent the Minotaur to capture Sally Jackson, because he had intended to use her as leverage in bargaining with Zeus. After the Helm of Darkness was recovered, Percy gave it to the Furies, who sent it back to the Underworld. Hades sent Sally back to her apartment.
Hades hoped that one of his children, Bianca or Nico, would be the child mentioned in the prophecy. After about 70 years he sent the Fury Alecto to release them from the Lotus casino.
Persephone began forming a weapon for Hades without his knowledge, a sword that would act as a key to bring people into and out of the Underworld. The sword was stolen, but retrieved by Thalia, Percy, and Nico. Percy refuses to give Hades the sword unless Hades would swear on the river Styx not to use the sword against the gods. Hades angrily agrees and recovers the sword, but was angry with Persephone for making the weapon without his attention.
After this, it was realized that Thalia was the daughter of Zeus. Hades was already angry with Zeus for killing Maria, but became furious as he realized that Zeus had broken the pact. He set out to kill Thalia. He sent all the monsters of the Underworld to murder her, and she had to sacrifice herself in order to protect those she was traveling with. Zeus prevented her from going to the Underworld, however, by turning her into a tree.
The Titans returned in the final book, and at first Hades did not desire to help the Olympians fend them off, and chose instead to stay in the Underworld with Persephone and Demeter. However, his son finally persuaded him to fight, and Hades, Persephone, and Nico did their best to fend off Hades’ father, Kronos. However, Kronos was able to enter the throne room of the Empire State Building, but was stopped by Percy and his friends, as well as Hestia. After the victory, Hades also sat in the throne room with the others, and Percy stated that he should have his own camp at Camp Half-Blood.
Camp Half-blood, however, is now receiving an unusually large number of unclaimed demigods that are causing quite a bit of trouble for everyone. Hades can’t help but wonder if Zeus has broken his promise yet again…========================================
